Why We Built Commercefull — and Why It Might Be Right for You
The case for owning your commerce stack — what Commercefull is, who it's for, and the five things you get back when you stop renting your store.
October 6, 2026
Every commerce platform makes the same promise: focus on your business, we’ll handle the technology. What they don’t mention is the trade — you’re not buying software, you’re renting your own store back, month after month, feature by feature.
Commercefull exists because we think there’s a better deal on the table.
The problem we’re solving
Watch what happens to a successful SaaS merchant over three years. They start at $39/month. Then they need subscriptions (+$99/mo app). Loyalty (+$49/mo). Reviews (+$15/mo). B2B pricing (+$89/mo). Returns management (+$59/mo). Better analytics (+$49/mo). The checkout needs customizing — that’ll be Shopify Plus at ~$2,300/month.
By the time they’re doing $1M in revenue, a typical app stack runs $300–$800/month on top of the platform fee. At $10M, $2,500–$6,000/month — a headcount’s worth of budget going to plugin rent.
And at the end of it, they still don’t own the checkout, can’t query their own database, and face a painful rebuild if they ever want to leave.
What Commercefull is
A complete commerce platform — 43 modules in one codebase — released under Apache-2.0. Self-host it, modify it, extend it, leave it. The stack is deliberately boring: TypeScript, Node.js/Express 5, PostgreSQL 18, EJS + Tailwind storefront, REST and GraphQL APIs.
Everything other platforms sell as apps ships in the box:
- Revenue features: loyalty points & rewards, subscriptions with dunning, paid memberships, gift cards, promotions & coupons
- Enterprise features: B2B (companies, RFQ→quote→order, net terms, approvals), multi-vendor marketplace, multi-store with BOPIS
- Operations: multi-warehouse inventory, pick/pack/ship fulfillment, carriers & labels, returns & store credit, built-in support desk
- Growth: analytics & cohorts, scheduled reporting, customer segmentation, automation engine, webhooks with signed delivery
- Platform: page builder & themes, CMS, media pipeline, i18n, GDPR tooling, immutable audit log, migration tooling
The five pillars
Everything we build rolls up to five commitments:
Your data. Standard PostgreSQL, on infrastructure you control. Export everything with pg_dump — no export wizard, no rate limits, no “contact support for your data.”
Your checkout. The checkout is code in the repo. Change any step, any field, any flow — no Plus-tier paywall, no sandboxed script slot. Payments stay in SAQ A-EP scope via PSP-hosted card fields, so owning checkout doesn’t mean owning PCI scope.
Your cost. The software is $0. Your costs are infrastructure and (optionally) managed hosting or tailored development. No app tax, no transaction fees to us, no per-module pricing.
Your stability. Native modules share one data model and ship tested together — the integration tests alone run ~1,950 cases across the full API surface. No plugin roulette on upgrade day.
Your support. Real support at every tier, including free self-hosted. We don’t think “community forum” counts as support.
Three ways to run it
- Self-hosted — free forever. Clone,
yarn install, yarn db:migrate, yarn dev. You own everything. - Managed hosting — we run infrastructure, updates, and uptime. You keep code and data ownership; leaving is a feature.
- Tailored development — bespoke modules and workflows built for your business, delivered as standard TypeScript you fully own.
Who it’s for (honestly)
Commercefull is a great fit if you’re a growing merchant hitting the app-tax ceiling, a Shopify merchant who needs checkout control without Plus pricing, a WooCommerce store tired of plugin maintenance, or a Magento shop watching TCO outrun value.
It’s a weaker fit if you want zero technical involvement and don’t want to pay for managed hosting — or if your business depends on a niche third-party app with no equivalent yet.
The exit is the product
Here’s the test we hold ourselves to: if you left Commercefull tomorrow, how much of your business would you take with you? All of it — code, data, customizations, the lot. That’s not a limitation of our platform. That’s the point.
